Do I Need An Iron Water Filter?
An iron water filter does a great job of removing iron from your water, but do you need one?
Well first let’s talk about what iron is and how it gets in your water. Iron occurs naturally in ground water, soil, and sediments. It could also come from natural deposits, or industrial wastes. It is an essential trace element for the human body.
It is doubtful that you would have enough iron to cause any health problems. Small amounts of iron are essential. Larger amounts are more in the nuisance category. It could cause a bad appearance and taste in your water.
And in the kitchen, it could affect the taste and appearance of your food. It may also affect your dishes with staining.
Probably the worst thing about iron in your water is the damage that it could do in your home. Stains in your clothes, bathroom fixtures, and washing machine. And it clogs pipes after a long period of time. It is bad for the heating elements in your hot water heater.
It could also stain your house and sidewalk if you use irrigation. I am sure that you have see houses with rusty stains on them from irrigation!
Some people think that if they are on a municipal water system they will not have an iron water problem. Well this is only true to a certain extent.
If iron was the only thing removed by using a water filtering system, you may have to do some thinking. It may not be that big of a problem for you.
But the thing to consider is all of the other things that an iron water filter will remove from your water. Even though iron is more of a nuisance that anything else, it is only one thing that a filter will remove. There are many things in your water that could be doing real harm to your health. And not just from drinking it. Cooking and showering in untreated water could be just as bad.
So when deciding if you need an iron water filter just remember to look at all of the benefits and cures.
