Do you need a well water filter? After all your well passed the test and was certified “safe” to drink by a government agency.

Just what does that mean? Well those are minimum standards. That doesn’t mean that your water will taste good, smell good and not leave stains and or buildups! It simply means that you will be safe if you drink it, according to their standards.

So how do you know if well water filters are needed at your home? You should be able to look in the phone book and find someone to test your water. Most companies will do it for free. But if they are selling systems, beware. They may try to sell you a high maintenance system that you do not need.

There are some indicators that you can actually see for yourself. Elevated levels of iron in your water could leave rust colored stains in your toilet, sinks, and tubs.

And if your water tastes funny, it could be one of several problems. High sodium levels, high iron content, acidity, or even chemicals in your water supply.

Your water may smell. A rotten egg smell could be due to sulfur. A soapy odor could be due to a leaking septic tank. A leaking inground gas tank could give you a petroleum smell. Or if your system has been over chlorinated, you will smell chlorine.

If you have one or more of these problems you may just want to get a well water filter system.

You should be able to get one for less than a thousand dollars. And make sure that it does not require a lot of maintenance. A good one will last for 3 – 5 years before you need to change the filter. And buy from a reputable company.
